MC026-04 Wind in Action – Practical Wind Load Calculations for Façade Design
About This CPD
This practical technical CPD takes the wind load — usually the dominant load on a façade — and works through the full calculation, step by step: from the building location and the national wind map, through terrain, orography, and peak velocity pressure, to the net design pressure on every zone of the façade surface.
Presented by Eugene Korch (IAST), the course uses the base Eurocode for wind actions together with the UK National Annex as the working example, closes with a complete worked calculation for a real building, and reviews the errors seen on real projects — and how to avoid them. The course is released on demand and available from 27 August 2026.
This course covers:
Using a complete worked example and clear diagrams, this CPD focuses on the practical goal: a wind load calculation you can carry out, check, and defend.
The calculation chain — from the national wind map to the net pressure on every façade zone
Basic wind speed — the map value and the directional, season, probability, and altitude factors
Terrain — the three UK categories, fetch and direction, displacement height, and the administrative boundary error
Orography — hills, ridges, and escarpments, the significance check, and the altitude of the upwind base
Peak velocity pressure — the full formula, the exposure factor shortcut, and when the shortcut is not allowed
External pressure coefficients — the five wall zones, the parameter e, corner suction, and the loaded area effect
Internal pressure — the two standard cases, dominant openings, and temporary openings during construction
Net pressure — the sign convention, the absolute-value error, and sealed systems versus rainscreens
Funnelling — the UK rules for buildings standing between e/4 and e apart
A complete worked example — every intermediate value shown, plus the common errors and the report contents
